Is Ozone Layer Healing?

There are rumors out in the public that the ozone layer has started healing after the second world war. This is the first time in past 60 years,  we heard a good news about our ecosystem. The lockdown in 70% of the world has shown its positive response. Some critics also cite, "Earth on recovery mode". To find out how much truth lies in this claim, let's start some basic study.


 What is the Ozone Layer?

Ozone is a type of gas present naturally in our atmosphere approximately at an altitude of 20-25 kilometers from sea level. Ozone is an isotope of oxygen, it's chemistry involves three oxygen atoms bonded covalently. This ozone layer protects the earth surface from scorching beams of ultraviolet radiation that arise from the sun. The constant smoke from industries, automobiles and the greenhouse effect disrupted the ozone layer and this layer was on the verge of collapse. Ozone is a poisonous gas, it means if you smell it you will end up in a coffin or a hospital (depending on your luck). 

Scientific Research: 

The space researchers and weather forecasting institutions have given a good news about recovery of ozone layer. The depletion of ozone layer in past became so much alarming that United Nations reached out a precautionary measure called "Montreal Protocol". This protocol came in the response of excessive usage of Chloroflorocarbons (CFCs). The CFCs are certain substances that are classified in the category of ODS (Ozone Depleting Substances).  

According to Mr. Antara Bunerjee, a visiting fellow at University of Colorado, "We found certain clues and signs of climatic changes in the Southern Hemisphere, specially in air circulation patterns". 


 Lockdown Effect: 

The lockdown since its implementation has brought some positive developments in our ecological system. The closure of some industries and less automobile usage has proven good to our environment. This lessened carbon dioxide ratio in air, other poisonous gases in air are at their lowest rate. After 65 years, earth is enjoying pure air with little pollution in air quality. This may be a miracle or a biological attack, is another topic. But, we hope these crisis shall end soon because a pandemic is much worse than a broken ozone layer or slightly polluted air. You may not agree with me but we can overcome a pollution, but not a pandemic about whom we know nothing.

                First Recorded Pandemic    The first recorded pandemic in the history was the plague. The first Plague pandemic was called the Plague of Justinian.
